So you’ve arrived at a point in your life where you’d like to settle down, maybe build a family and enjoy several years of happiness in the beautiful city of Calgary. You have your whole life planned already, but one question still remains: Do you want to build a house or do you want to buy one?
Here’s the thing: Both buying a house and building a house has its own pros and cons. At the end of the day, which one you end up doing is a very personal decision. Our goal isn’t to sway you on one side — it’s to educate you on the pros and cons of each side.
So with that being said, here are the pros and cons of building a house vs. buying a house in Calgary:
Pros of buying a home: Buying a house is both convenient and less expensive than building a home. If your budget is tight (or if you don’t want to spend more than a certain amount of money on lodging), then buying a house might be the way to go for you. Likewise, if time is of the essence for you, then working with Calgary home builders is probably not something that you are interested in doing.
Cons of buying a home: The obvious one is not being able to customize your home, or having to settle for something that you are not happy with. Lot selection is also non-existent.
Pros of building a home: Building a home (especially a Calgary custom home) is all about customization. You get to have the final say on EVERYTHING, from the floor plans to the colour of the kitchen walls. Another pro to building a home is that you will not have to worry about health concerns that may be associated with older houses (examples of this would be asbestos or mold). It would be a fresh start for you and your family.
Cons of building a home: Building a house is expensive — we’re not going to lie. It also can take several months for it to be completed.
